I LOVE area rugs, I would have to say it's a bit of an addiction.
Your floor is your 5th wall, an important visual when you walk into a room. An area rug ground the room, dictate a style and it's also an
inexpensive way to change up the look of a room.
Here are a few guidelines to keep in mind use when
 purchasing an area rug.
Keep your lifestyle in mind.
Do you need it to be family & kid friendly?
Will it receive alot of wear & tear?   Is it in a high traffic area?

Since I like to change up & move around my rugs I usually go for the olefin/polypropylene. They are less expensive, lightweight, super easy to clean (hose it off in the backyard) & they are available in endless colours & patterns. I've had a beautiful 5'x8' olefin rug in my foyer at the front door,
people walk in with snow, wet & mud.
It vacuumed up & always looked great!

Wool area rugs are soft and resilient, and hold their appearance well over time. Their ability to absorb moisture also prevents static electricity. Wool resists dirt and repels water and other liquids, keeping it clean longer. It can also retain its pile under the weight of furniture and frequent foot traffic. Wool rugs often shed, but this does not affect the wearability of the rug and decreases over time.

Olefin/Polypropylene is a popular material for machine-made area rugs because it is soft and wool-like. These types of rugs are stain-resistant, quick-drying and lightweight due to their low-density fibres.
Size
Area rugs should be large enough to anchor & support the gathering space. There are many theories about what the size should be,
I personally think it should balance with the size of your room and furniture.

A 5'x'8' looks fantastic in front of a sofa in average sized livingrooms.

In the dining room the rule of thumb is .... all the chairs should sit on the rug when pulled out from the table. Most times it's an 8'x10'.

A round table should ideally should have a round rug.

Same rule applies, all chairs should be on the rug when pulled out.

Bedroom rugs should typically be sized like this.....

Pattern
This is the fun part, be bold, be brave, mix pattern with pattern, there are so many choices out there!

Take a look at your room, every rooms needs a rug, do you have the right size? Does it add 'pop', is it easy to maintain?
Rugs can range from $100 - $1000's of dollars, but at the entry pricepoint you can transform your entire space inexpensively.
