Frequently asked Questions
Heirloom, what do you mean?
I imagine the ruler can be used in various different ways.
A) A Child's Stick - a ruler for each child, hung in their room recording their height from baby, toddler to teen or when they stop growing. This stick could then be taken by the grown up child to record their child's growth and so on.
B) A Family Stick - a ruler hung in a communal area of the home, hall, kitchen, familyroom. The entire family's height is recorded, don't forget to include Mom & Dad so the kids can celebrate when they are taller than you!
What kind of wood do you use?
I use spruce or pine, it's light in weight, soft & great to work with. If you have a special request, let's talk, I can probably do it but the pricing may change.
How to you apply the numbers & letters?
The lines, number and letters are hand lettered meaning I don't use decals or machinery, I use an oil based paint marker. This method may be time consuming but it gives the ruler that vintage old word charm look I'm going for.
Why don't you start the ruler at 0 inches like a regular ruler?
I have a great reason for starting the ruler at 6", your baseboard. Almost every home has some type of baseboard or decorative moulding where the floor meets the wall. Starting at 6" ensures your ruler will hang flast against the wall.
What do you do to add colour to the wood?
I use a blend of a few different products, Minwax &
I sand the board feeling for rough spots, smoothing them out. I apply the stain and once dry I sand the entire surface for a second time ensuring a smooth satin finish. I then wipe away all dust etc. and apply another coat of stain and when dry i apply a polyurethane satin
